11 www.OldVillageMountPleasant.com | www.ColemanBoulevard.com feature W ith a sunset-stained wall, vintage surfboards on the walls, surfing videos playing on TVs and Reggae music gently drifting in the background, Mex 1 Coastal Cantina on Sullivan’s Island imparts a chill, inviting vibe. This is the second location for Mex 1, with local owners Dave and Chrissy Lorenz and Roddy Smith looking to replicate the recipe that made the original spot in West Ashley a success – an emphasis on fresh food and drinks and enlightened hospitality. “We focus on is customer service and treating our crew with respect. Having a fun and positive environment is important for us,” said Morgan Hurley, beverage director and brand ambassador for all Mex 1 Coastal Cantinas. For Morgan, who grew up on the Isle of Palms, the decision to expand to Sullivan’s seemed like a natural fit. “We wanted to be close to the beach. We feel grateful that the island embraced us. It’s been a mutual love from the beginning,” he said. The second-story restaurant features covered outdoor seating overlooking bustling Middle Street. Mex 1 takes pride in its margaritas, which are all made with 100 percent agave tequila. Fresh, homemade ingredients dominate the Baja-Mexican inspired menu, with all sauces prepared daily. Even the pork and chicken are smoked in-house. Don’t miss the Bangin’ Shrimp Taco, their most popular item. Morgan said the laid-back vibe, quality service, tasty cocktails and, of course, the food, attract people to Mex 1. “You can come right off the beach or from work and relax, enjoy some margaritas with friends and eat some killer food,” he pointed out. Mex 1 Coastal Cantina, which hosts live music three nights a week, is located at 2205 Middle St. To learn more, visit www.mex1can.com . By Pamela Brownstein A Chill, Inviting Vibe Mex 1 Coastal Cantina I f you’re in need of a hot, cheesy pizza at the end of a busy day, Steel City Pizza in Mount Pleasant can suit your craving. Owned and operated by locals, Steel City has been a favorite in the area for 12 years. “Our passion is pizza, and our craft is making great food,” said owner Adam Carb. “Everything is made fresh, cut fresh or specifically chosen because of its quality and taste that it lends the food.” Originally from Pittsburgh, Carb said that he and his partner, Mark Gray, were both “inspired by the diverse food options” of the Northeast and sought to create a place where families, locals, regulars and visitors would all feel at home. While Steel City is well worth the short drive, delivery is also an option for those staying at home. You can even order online. “Our menu has something for everyone, and we have good lunch and dinner options,” said Carb. “We are value oriented, with fair prices and large portions. And we do dine-in, take-out, delivery and catering.” Menu items for Steel City range from Northeastern- styled pies to fresh salads to hearty pastas to awesome subs – and then there is the signature “Weggie.” If you’ve never had one, you need to. “We are always running specials and limited time items,” said Carb. “We love experimenting with customers and getting their feedback. We’ll update our menu soon with other great items, but don’t worry – the favorites aren’t going anywhere.” For the full menu, online ordering and delivery options, visit www.steelcitypizza.com or call 843-856-2525.
